Care must be taken when installing exterior lighting products especially those that are ground mounted. All the products are sold and tested fit for purpose and the IP rating is set according to the design and purpose of the luminaire, more details on IP ratings can be found under design ideas section. The weakest point is generally the installation of the product where adequate drainage has not been made for ground buried lights or poor cable joints have been made which are not 100% water tight and will allow for water penetration. There are a number of waterproof enclosures available on this site along with heat shrink cable joint kits and resin gel packs to fill the junction boxes to make a watertight enclosure. Where possible try and keep all joints and transformers above ground, however if this is not possible there are potted burial kits available.Copper grease should also be used on screws and nuts to stop them binding and ease removal at a later date when a lamp change is required.
Lamp colour is determined by the Kelvins and a lamp which is 2,700 kelvin
is classed as warm white and sympathetic to skin tones and warm colours like red
brickwork or yellows etc. A lamp with a kelvin rating of kelvin of 6,500k is in the
blueish white spectrum and works well against a white background and cooler colour
brick work and will appear brighter to the naked eye than the warm colour spectrum.
Plants and shrubs work better with a warm spectrum from 2,700k up to 4,000k max.
All lamps have a lumen number and the higher the lumen number the brighter the lamp,
however colour of the lamp (kelvins ) also comes in to play here as a whiter lamp
at 6,000 kelvins and above would always appear brighter to the naked eye than a warmer
colour lamp at the 2,700 kelvins light spectrum even if it has the same lumen output.
A halogen 150w R7 lamp that is used in a standard garden security flood light would
produce around 2,300 lumens and a 26w compact fluorescent would produce around 1,800
lumens. Placing lights closer to the item to be illuminated is a good way
of using a lower lumen lamp rather than trying to flood light a big area. LED lamps
are now used extensively in the garden and for indoor applications and the only way
you can compare light output is by the amount of lumens each lamp produces rather
than the old way of going by the wattage of a lamp. For example you can get a 3w
LED lamp with 400 lumens and a 5w LED lamp of inferior quality may only produce
Care should be taken for local wildlife, insects, and general light pollution,
this means the warmer colour spectrum does not interfere with insects and general
wildlife as much as the blue spectrum of light which can disrupt their normal
night time activity, This also applies to bats where a anti glare light fitting works
better as well as reducing overall light pollution in the area.
